During the most recent summer transfer window, FC Barcelona added Ilkay Gundogan, Joao Cancelo, and Joao Felix, three very notable players.
Oriol Romeu, who ironically cost Barcelona more than the stars who joined Xavi’s team for free, was another player who signed with the Catalan club in the summer.
In order to make this transfer to his boyhood club possible, the midfield player paid some cash out of pocket to FC Barcelona, which paid €3.4 million for him.
Romeu cost more than players like Ilkay Gundogan, but when he first joined Barcelona and established himself as a midfield mainstay, his signing appeared like a steal.
Romeu’s performances began to suffer after Frenkie’s injury, though, and Xavi no longer starts him in the starting lineup. He is still in high demand in the Spanish market, notwithstanding the decline in his performances.
The remarks made by Getafe President Angel Torres make this evident. With Mauro Arambarri sidelined due to injury, Pepe Bordalas’s options for playing in the midfield are currently limited to Luis Milla and Nemanja Maksimovic for the Madrid-based team.
In reaction to Romeu’s acquisition, Angel Torres said as follows, making it apparent that he will be trying to bolster his team’s midfield:
Nothing is impossible in football. I’ve brought up the Messi narrative numerous times. He could have come when he was sixteen. Although there are challenges in football, nothing is insurmountable.
We are currently working on four or five extremely complex projects. We are awaiting the coach’s arrival tomorrow or the following day so that we can get approval. We’ll send in one or two extras if the coach approves.
Apart from Romeu, Getafe is also considering Ilaix Moriba, a former Barcelona midfielder, and Torres has revealed that his club has made an offer for him.
“One of the football players that we have been offered is him. He is known to the coach. It’s likely if we can come to an understanding. To complete the squad, we will first strengthen the midfield and, if at all possible, add a wing player. That’s it. We also won’t lose our minds.
Romeu is currently not wanted by FC Barcelona because they already have a small squad and need every player to participate in all of their competitions. Getafe, though, might be a tempting option for Romeu if the Catalans can sign a pivot in the middle of the field.
