For Pep Guardiola, it’s all about quality over quantity.
The often-repeated notion that Manchester City can field two competitive teams stems from the versatility of their squad members rather than sheer numbers. In reality, Guardiola prefers a smaller group of players, each capable of regular minutes. This approach minimizes discontent and frustration, maintaining a positive atmosphere in the camp.
This season, Guardiola’s streamlined squad will feature new signing Savinho, a Brazilian winger acquired from Troyes, a fellow City Football Group club. The £21m addition, previously known as Savio, is expected to make an immediate impact rather than just swelling the roster.
There was no certainty that the 20-year-old would jump straight into the first team upon signing, but circumstances have aligned in his favor. Following a promising performance for Brazil in the Copa America this summer, Savinho is poised to integrate into Guardiola’s system after a brief holiday.
City’s sporting director, Txiki Begiristain, has closely monitored Savinho’s progress, frequently visiting Girona last season. His insights, combined with the City Football Group’s network, assure that Savinho is ready for this step. Historical benchmarks set by players like Gabriel Jesus, Leroy Sane, Julian Alvarez, and Jeremy Doku further affirm Savinho’s readiness, with the Brazilian boasting more experience than these stars did at similar points in their careers.
Despite this, Savinho faces significant pressure, especially if City makes few additional signings this transfer window. He must prove that he can enhance a squad fresh off its fourth consecutive Premier League title.
Savinho’s early statements suggest confidence. He’s chosen the No.26 shirt, previously worn by Riyad Mahrez, a Premier League legend and multiple-club winner. “Mahrez is Mahrez, Savio is Savio. I don’t want to make people expect anything, just to show my football. But I like him a lot, how he plays,” he said. “He’s an inspiration, that’s why I’ve chosen his number! I’m really happy.”
By taking on this challenge, Savinho shows he’s ready to meet the high expectations set by City. Both the club and the player are optimistic that his contributions will preclude the need for further market pursuits.
