Brazilian police have officially cleared Manchester United winger Antony of domestic violence allegations made by his former partner.
Last year, Antony was given a leave of absence by United following public accusations from his ex-girlfriend Gabriela Cavallin, who claimed that he had assaulted and threatened her. Two additional women also accused Antony of assault, though one later withdrew her allegations. Antony has consistently denied any wrongdoing, vowing to clear his name.
Cavallin alleged that the first incident of violence occurred in June of the previous year while she was pregnant and vacationing in Brazil. She further claimed that on January 15, Antony headbutted and punched her at a Manchester hotel, damaging a breast implant. She also accused Antony of throwing a glass at her in May, resulting in a finger injury. Additionally, Cavallin alleged that the former Ajax player held her against her will in their home, preventing her from leaving.
Now, over a year after the allegations were made, Brazilian outlet Globo.com reports that the police in Brazil have dropped their investigation into Antony. The Sao Paulo police had been investigating Antony for insults, threats, assault, and domestic psychological violence, but ultimately found no evidence to support the claims.
When reached for comment by Globo.com, the Public Security Secretariat confirmed the case had been handled with confidentiality, adding, “More information should be requested from the courts.”
Meanwhile, Antony remains under investigation in England, though he has not been charged with any crime. Greater Manchester Police confirmed to Manchester World that their inquiry into the 24-year-old player is “ongoing.”
The £85 million winger did not see any game time in United’s Premier League opener against Fulham last Friday, remaining on the bench for the 1-0 victory.
