Former Manchester United captain and Republic of Ireland legend Roy Keane has urged the English FA to make a bold move by pursuing Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola for the vacant England managerial position.
Currently, the Three Lions are under the temporary guidance of Lee Carsley, but the U21s coach has already stated that his role is only temporary, ending in November when a permanent manager is expected to take over.
As speculation ramps up on who could succeed Gareth Southgate, several names have been floated, including Thomas Tuchel, who has recently gained traction with bookmakers, alongside Graham Potter and Eddie Howe.
However, following England’s recent Nations League win against Finland, Keane and fellow pundit Ian Wright agreed that the current list of candidates leaves much to be desired. Toward the end of the discussion, Keane dropped a bombshell suggestion.
“Go after Pep,” Keane boldly stated on ITV Sport. “His contract is up in the summer. Go for the best.”
Keane’s suggestion may not sit well with Manchester City fans, especially after they displayed a Catalan banner at their last home game, pleading for Guardiola to stay. When asked about his future back in July, Guardiola offered some clarity but kept his options open. “When I’m leaving, I will say I’m leaving, but I didn’t say that,” he noted. “We will see what happens. But I will not rule out extending my contract.”
The City boss added, “I would love to stay because I enjoy it here. Nine years at the same club is an eternity, so I want to make sure it’s the right decision for everyone involved – not just for me, but for the club and the players.”
