Man City’s Double Contract Mission: Securing Haaland and Gvardiol for the Future
Manchester City are doubling down on efforts to secure their star talents, with contract talks already underway to extend Erling Haaland’s stay at the Etihad and a new deal reportedly in the works for defender Josko Gvardiol.
While City has yet to finalize an agreement with Haaland, extending his future is only part of the club’s strategy. The City hierarchy is also preparing an offer to reward Gvardiol for his impressive performances since joining last summer.
Despite nearly four years remaining on his current deal, Gvardiol has quickly proven his worth, prompting City to discuss fresh terms. According to reports, the Croatian defender will be offered a two-year extension, keeping him at the club until 2030, with a pay rise to £150,000 per week.
The 22-year-old arrived from RB Leipzig for £70 million and has since made 56 appearances, winning the Premier League in his debut season and catching fans’ attention with his ability to score. On his surprising goal-scoring prowess, Gvardiol shared, “To be fair, I didn’t expect that from myself. All I wanted was to be a solid defender next to Ruben [Dias], John [Stones], Manu [Akanji], and [Nathan] Ake. But the manager decided to turn me into a number 10, a left winger!”
Reflecting on his versatile play style, Gvardiol added, “When I was younger, I played everywhere—striker, winger, midfielder. I feel comfortable no matter where I’m put, and often find myself in this left pocket because the manager wants me there.”
Gvardiol also expressed admiration for Pep Guardiola, whose contract expires in less than a year. “Pep is always passionate and focused. He’s constantly innovating and motivating us,” Gvardiol said. “We’d all love for him to stay longer because he brings out the best in us and has built something special here.”
The defender described working under Guardiola as incredibly rewarding. “He constantly pushes us to reach our full potential, with high standards and incredible attention to detail that have helped me grow as both a player and a person.”
