Zack Steffen Reflects on Man City Journey, MLS Return, and Life Beyond Football
Zack Steffen, former Manchester City goalkeeper and current Colorado Rapids star, opened up about his career, faith, charity work, and life back in the United States in an insightful interview. Now 29, Steffen is thriving on and off the field after returning to his homeland, where he enjoys being closer to family while making an impact both as a player and a role model.
Faith and Perspective
Steffen’s life is deeply rooted in his faith, which he credits for helping him navigate challenges. Reflecting on life’s trials, he shared, “Faith definitely helps. It has taught me that everything happens for a reason. We all want life to progress positively, but that’s not how the world works. You ask God for patience, and he puts you in situations where you have to grow that patience.”
Charity Work: Building Brighter Futures
Steffen has leveraged his platform to make a difference. In 2020, during the Covid lockdown, he co-founded Voycenow, a charity aimed at improving opportunities for children in underserved communities. Inspired by the tragic murder of George Floyd, Steffen and fellow footballer Alex Crognale created the initiative to promote positivity and provide resources like education, sports programs, and mental health support.
“We’re focused on kids’ futures – books, WiFi, nutrition, and education. We want to raise money, give our time, and provide hope, motivation, and support. I was raised to treat others how you want to be treated, and that’s what I try to instill in the world,” Steffen said passionately.
Memories of Manchester City
Steffen joined Manchester City in 2019, a dream move that brought highs like winning the League Cup and competing in the Premier League and Champions League. While he acknowledges the challenges of limited playing time, Steffen reflects fondly on his experience.
“City is an incredible family club with an amazing support system. My time there was short, but I learned a lot about myself and from them. I’ll always be grateful for how they treated me and pushed me to grow on and off the field,” Steffen said.
He also shared his admiration for working under Pep Guardiola, calling the experience “eye-opening.”
“The focus, commitment, and demands Pep had on us every single day were immense. He believed in his players, instilling confidence while pushing you to be your best. It was a mental and physical challenge every day.”
The Return to MLS
After five years with City, including a successful loan spell at Middlesbrough, Steffen sought regular playing time and found it with the Colorado Rapids. His performances have earned him a recall to the USA national team, and he’s optimistic about the future, particularly with the MLS growing in stature and a home World Cup on the horizon.
“The league is improving – more money, better players, and more recognition globally. It’s exciting to play week in, week out. I’m doing what I can control, and I believe God will reward me in ways I don’t even expect yet,” he added.
