“Exciting Changes Ahead? NASCAR President Hints at Future Updates for Xfinity and Truck Series”

NASCAR Xfinity Series Evolution: Steve Phelps Discusses Potential Changes

NASCAR president Steve Phelps was the keynote speaker during the Race Industry Week webinar live stream on Tuesday, where he addressed potential changes to the NASCAR Xfinity Series platform. The discussion highlighted the future direction of the second-tier national touring division, known for its distinct characteristics like traditional live axle suspension, narrower tires, and reduced power-to-weight aerodynamic ratio.

While the Xfinity Series is celebrated for its unique racing style, Phelps acknowledged that evolution is inevitable. “I think we’ll continue to fine-tune what that car is,” Phelps told host Brad Gillie. “And it’s an industry-wide thing. It’s not just, ‘Hey, NASCAR’s going to do this, this, and this.’ It really is working with our (manufacturer) partners, working with Goodyear, working with our race teams. And we’re in constant collaboration with those groups, with those stakeholder groups.”

Collaboration and Industry Trends

Phelps emphasized that any changes would stem from collaboration with key stakeholders, including manufacturers, Goodyear, and race teams. He hinted at ongoing discussions about future adjustments. “You know, I think there’s some other opportunities for us in the lower series to make some changes. What those look like, I don’t know, but we’ll keep iterating on the NextGen car,” he said.

He also highlighted the need to work with existing and potential new manufacturers. “I think we’re looking at some things in the Xfinity Series, nothing to announce now. I think there’s some things we need to do with our race teams in the Xfinity Series as well as (the manufacturers) that are existing and potential new OEs that could be in that series and in our Truck Series.”

EV and Alternative Fuels: A Future Direction?

NASCAR has been developing an EV prototype and exploring alternative fuels that could shape the foundation of future series. However, Phelps noted that such changes depend on the automotive industry’s direction and the interests of current and prospective manufacturers.

Ultimately, any modifications to the Xfinity Series or Craftsman Truck Series will require the support of those within their respective garages to ensure continued competition. This collaborative approach underscores the importance of aligning with industry trends while preserving the essence of these iconic racing platforms.
