LIVE UPDATE: OKLAHOMA SOONERS STACK THE OFFENSIVE LINE THROUGH TRANSFER PORTAL
The Oklahoma Sooners continue their aggressive approach to bolstering the offense through the transfer portal. After securing commitments from John Mateer, the top quarterback in the portal, and high-upside wide receivers Javonnie Gibson and Keontez Lewis, the Sooners have now added their second offensive tackle in recent days.
On Wednesday, Western Carolina transfer offensive tackle Derek Simmons announced his commitment to Oklahoma.
Simmons Brings Experience to Norman
A proven veteran, Simmons has started 26 games across three seasons for the Catamounts, missing the 2022 season due to injury. In his collegiate career, Simmons has logged over 1,500 snaps, showcasing his reliability and skill at the tackle position.
In 2023, Simmons impressed against Arkansas, allowing just two pressures on 41 pass-blocking snaps. He continued his strong performance in 2024, surrendering only two pressures on 49 pass-blocking snaps.
The 6’5″, 315-pound tackle attracted attention from multiple Power Four programs during this transfer cycle, receiving offers from schools such as South Carolina, Nebraska, Alabama, Michigan, Texas Tech, Florida State, and Kansas State.
Building Depth on the Offensive Line
With Simmons joining Luke Baklenko, another transfer portal acquisition, the Sooners have added two experienced offensive tackles to enhance their line. Both players are expected to compete for starting roles during spring practices, bringing depth and leadership to an already promising unit.
Oklahoma Reloading for 2025
The Sooners’ proactive moves in the transfer portal reflect their commitment to building a dominant offense for the upcoming season. Head coach Brent Venables and his staff are ensuring the team remains competitive at the highest level, positioning the program for success in 2025 and beyond.
