“SEC Coach’s Son and Star QB Cole Gonzales Commits to Oklahoma in Stunning Transfer Move”

Live Feed Report: Oklahoma Bolsters QB Room with Transfer Portal Addition

Oklahoma’s efforts to reshape its quarterback room through the transfer portal continue, as the Sooners land a standout from the FCS ranks. Former Southern Conference Player of the Year Cole Gonzales is the latest addition to the team.

Gonzales, a transfer from Western Carolina, brings impressive credentials. The son of Florida wide receivers coach Billy Gonzales, Cole has deep football roots, having played for Trinity Catholic High School in Ocala, Florida—just 40 miles from the University of Florida campus in Gainesville.

After spending three seasons at Western Carolina, Gonzales transitions to the FBS level with one redshirt and a full season of eligibility remaining. During his collegiate career, he appeared in 27 games, earning the SoCon Player of the Year award in 2023. That season, Gonzales completed 66% of his passes for 2,803 yards and posted a stellar touchdown-to-interception ratio of 28-8 over 11 games.

Though limited to eight games this past season, Gonzales showed growth, increasing his average yards per game from 254.8 to 317.9. His TD-INT ratio was 12-7 during that span. Overall, his career stats include a 64% completion rate, 6,682 passing yards, 51 touchdowns, and 22 interceptions.

Gonzales joins an evolving Oklahoma quarterback room that recently added top transfer John Mateer and is set to return promising talent Michael Hawkins. The Sooners also secured 2025 recruit Jett Niu, a 3-star prospect, further strengthening their depth at the position.

Oklahoma’s quarterback overhaul signals their commitment to building a versatile and competitive roster under center. Stay tuned for more updates as the Sooners prepare for the upcoming season.
