JUST IN: Steve Sarkisian declines NFL interviews, and Commits to Texas with Contract extension

Steve Sarkisian Commits to Texas with Contract Extension Amid NFL Rumors

In a resounding statement of loyalty, Texas Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian has extended his contract with the program, silencing speculation about a potential leap to the NFL. The announcement comes just a week after Texas fell to Ohio State in the College Football Playoff semifinal.

Amid swirling rumors of NFL interest during the playoff run, Sarkisian made his priorities clear. NFL Insider Adam Schefter reported that Sarkisian had “drawn some interest” from NFL teams ahead of Texas’ showdown with Ohio State. However, Sarkisian quickly dispelled any doubts about his focus.

“Unified. Focused. Relentless. Together with our Board of Regents Chairman Kevin Eltife and Athletic Director CDC, we’re locked in. Let’s make history!” Sarkisian declared before the game, emphasizing his commitment to the Longhorns.

Though Sarkisian has experience in the NFL—having served as an assistant with the Oakland Raiders in 2004 and later with the Atlanta Falcons from 2017 to 2018—he appears firmly rooted in Austin. His contract with Texas, previously running through 2030, has been extended, ensuring continuity for a program on the rise.

Declining NFL Opportunities

According to reports, Sarkisian turned down two interviews for NFL head coaching positions to remain with Texas. Brett McMurphy, a College Football Insider, broke the news on X (formerly Twitter):

“Steve Sarkisian agrees to contract extension (with) Texas after declining interviews (with two) NFL teams, sources said. UT Board of Regents chairman Kevin Eltife (and Athletic Director) Chris Del Conte were key figures in getting the deal done, source said. Sarkisian has led UT to consecutive (College Football Playoff) semifinal berths (and) double-digit win seasons for (first) time in 17 years.”

Athletic Director Chris Del Conte shared his excitement on social media, posting a picture with Sarkisian. The head coach responded with a simple yet powerful, “Hook’Em.”

A Legacy in Progress

Sarkisian’s impact at Texas has been undeniable. He guided the Longhorns to a Southeastern Conference Championship in their inaugural year in the conference and led them to two consecutive College Football Playoff semifinal appearances.

A source close to the program emphasized Sarkisian’s dedication: “The fact Sarkisian didn’t take any NFL interviews shows his buy-in & commitment to the University of Texas,” the source told McMurphy.

Though the Texas football program has yet to make an official announcement, it’s clear the future under Sarkisian looks bright. With the backing of key figures like Kevin Eltife and Chris Del Conte, Sarkisian has a solid foundation to continue building on the Longhorns’ recent success.

The road ahead is filled with promise, and as Sarkisian said, “Let’s make history!”
