Jax State Legend Eric Davis Returns as Director of Player Development
JACKSONVILLE, AL — A familiar face is back at Jacksonville State, as Head Coach Charles Kelly has officially named Eric Davis the program’s new Director of Player Development.
Davis, a Jacksonville State Hall of Famer, will play a crucial role in guiding Gamecock players both on and off the field—focusing on their academic, social, and athletic growth.
A JSU icon, Davis led the Gamecocks to the 1989 NCAA Division II Championship Game, finishing with a stellar 13-1 record. The Anniston native earned First-Team All-Gulf South honors and was recognized on the conference’s All-Decade Team for the 1980s.

Coach Kelly emphasized the value of bringing in someone with Davis’ experience:
“I think it’s important for our players to have access to a player that has been here and had success at the highest level. Eric is a professional on and off the field, and I’m excited to see our players benefit from his counsel.”
Davis’ resume speaks for itself. A 1990 second-round NFL Draft pick by the San Francisco 49ers, he became a two-time All-Pro, two-time Pro Bowler, and played a pivotal role in the 49ers’ Super Bowl XXIX victory—snagging a critical second-quarter interception to help defeat the San Diego Chargers.
Now, Davis is eager to give back to his alma mater.
“I’m thrilled to rejoin the program and work with these talented young men. Our goal is to support them in every way, helping them define their identity, pursue their dreams, and achieve success on and off the field.”
With 38 career interceptions and a 13-year NFL career, Davis brings a wealth of experience to Jacksonville State. A member of both the Division II College Hall of Fame and the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame, he now shifts his focus to mentoring the next generation of Gamecocks.
