South Carolina State Head Coach Chennis Berry Selected to Co-Lead TEAM GAITHER at 2025 HBCU Legacy Bowl
In an exciting announcement from the Black College Football Hall of Fame, Chennis Berry, head coach of South Carolina State, has been chosen to co-head coach TEAM GAITHER at the 2025 Allstate HBCU Legacy Bowl. Berry, fresh off a stellar first season at SC State where he led the Bulldogs to a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) championship and a spot in the Celebration Bowl, is honored to represent his school once again.
“It’s an honor to once again represent my school at the Allstate HBCU Legacy Bowl,” Berry remarked. “It’s a first-class experience that the players will love, and it provides them an opportunity to further their football careers.”
TEAM GAITHER, named after legendary Florida A&M coach Jake Gaither, will feature standout players from the MEAC and CIAA conferences. Alvin Parker, head coach at Virginia Union, will join Berry as co-coach.
“These coaches earned this honor by winning their respective conferences. Each coach exemplifies the spirit, leadership, and tradition of HBCU football, and we’re proud to have them,” said James “Shack” Harris, co-founder of the Black College Football Hall of Fame.
Berry’s impressive accolades include being named both AFCA Coach of the Year and MEAC Coach of the Year. He’ll have the unique opportunity to coach 10 of his own players from this season, including Jayden Broughton, Eric Brown Jr., John Hannibal Jr., Cam Johnson, Eric Phoenix, Aaron Smith, Justin Smith-Brown, Nick Taiste, Keshawn Toney, and Jarod Washington.
The 2025 Allstate HBCU Legacy Bowl is set for Saturday, February 22, at Tulane University’s Yulman Stadium in New Orleans.
