Shane Beamer Drops Injury Bombshell: Four Gamecocks Out for Spring Practice!

Gamecocks Hit with Spring Practice Setbacks – Four Players Out, RB Cleared to Train

Just two days before South Carolina kicks off spring practice, head coach Shane Beamer confirmed that four players will be sidelined for the entire session.

The Gamecocks will be without sophomore tight end Michael Smith, freshman defensive lineman Caleb Williams, freshman offensive lineman Damola Ajidahun, and veteran offensive lineman Ryan Brubaker for the duration of spring workouts.

Key Takeaways from Beamer’s Announcement:

  1. Michael Smith’s Absence Isn’t a Major Concern – While it might seem like a setback given Smith’s breakout freshman season (10 catches, 100+ yards, 1 TD), it’s worth noting that he didn’t participate in 2024 spring practices either. Despite that, he made a seamless transition into a key role last season, meaning his development likely won’t take a major hit.
  2. For Freshmen, It’s a Tougher BlowWilliams and Ajidahun could feel the impact of missing these reps. Williams, a three-star defensive lineman from Virginia, and Ajidahun, a four-star offensive lineman who flipped from Georgia Tech, won’t get the early adjustment period that spring practice provides. That could delay their path to contributing in the fall.

On the bright side, no major starters will miss spring, which keeps South Carolina in a relatively stable position heading into the offseason.

RB Rahsul Faison Cleared for Practice

There was at least one positive update – running back Rahsul Faison has been cleared to practice. However, his game eligibility is still pending.

“We’re very optimistic on everything,” Beamer said. “Is that 100% solidified right now? No. But we’re hopeful we’ll get some good news soon.”

Faison, a seventh-year transfer from Utah State, gained eligibility through the “Diego Pavia Rule,” which grants an extra season to players who previously played junior college football.

What’s Next?

The Gamecocks will open spring practice this week, leading up to their spring game on April 18 at 7:30 p.m. Fans will get their first look at the 2025 squad despite some notable absences.
