Tyler Herro’s brother enters South Carolina basketball transfer portal

Tyler Herro’s Brother Hits Transfer Portal After Brutal Season for South Carolina! Where Will He Land Next?

The South Carolina Gamecocks just wrapped up a nightmare season, finishing dead last in the SEC and crashing out in the first round of the SEC Tournament. Now, the roster shake-up has already begun.

Austin Herro, the younger brother of Miami Heat star Tyler Herro, has officially entered the transfer portal, per 247Sports’ Dushawn London. The sophomore guard struggled for playing time with the Gamecocks, appearing in just 10 games this season and scoring a total of two points in 14 minutes. With no clear path to more minutes, Herro is looking for a fresh start while retaining three years of eligibility.

A Different Path Than His NBA Star Brother

While Austin Herro struggled to make an impact at South Carolina, his older brother, Tyler Herro, took a very different route. After a one-and-done season at Kentucky, Tyler was selected 13th overall in the 2019 NBA Draft and has since become one of the league’s standout guards. His resume includes an NBA All-Rookie Second Team selection, a Sixth Man of the Year award, and most recently, a spot as a 2025 NBA All-Star.

Austin initially joined South Carolina as a preferred walk-on in 2023 but later earned a scholarship for the 2024-25 season. In high school, he showed promise, averaging 14.8 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 4.3 assists per game for Whitnall High School.

Where Will Austin Herro Land?

Now, with his South Carolina chapter closing, Herro could look to move closer to home. A transfer to a Big Ten program like Iowa could provide a rebuilding opportunity, while Marquette or Creighton might see him as a solid depth addition. A move to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee would allow him to play near home with potentially a much larger role.

With three years of eligibility left, Austin Herro still has plenty of time to carve out his own path—but where he lands next could define his basketball future.
