Dawn Staley and her dominant South Carolina squad are just one step away from cementing their place among the all-time greats in women’s college basketball history.
With a win in the national championship game, the Gamecocks would capture their third national title in just four seasons — a feat achieved by only two powerhouse programs: UConn and Tennessee.
“It’s hard to break into what Pat Summitt and Geno (Auriemma) have done for women’s basketball,” Staley admitted. “It’s really hard to even be mentioned in that air. … Anything that you do and you have sustained success is really, really, really hard.”
Reaching this level of dominance isn’t just about talent — it’s about consistency, culture, and grit. But Staley, now a fixture in the coaching elite, believes that once a program figures out the formula for success, maintaining it becomes more manageable.
“But once you are able to understand what it takes to succeed there, it’s a little easier because you know.”
With history on the line, Dawn Staley’s team is on the verge of joining legendary company — and they’re not slowing down anytime soon.
