Dawn Staley hints at South Carolina’s transfer portal plans

The South Carolina Gamecocks fell short in the national championship game on Sunday, losing to the UConn Huskies in a tough end to what was otherwise another standout season. The defeat ended a run that saw South Carolina ranked in the AP Top 2 for the fourth consecutive year—a testament to their consistency under head coach Dawn Staley.

Despite the team’s continued success, Staley has been vocal about the need for adjustments heading into the 2025-2026 season. For months, she has signaled a clear intention: to pursue a big-bodied post player through the transfer portal. Following Sunday’s game, she doubled down on those plans and gave further insight into what’s to come.

“I’m excited about the potential talent on next year’s team,” Staley said, “especially with getting in the transfer portal and getting some experienced pieces that can help with this young group.”

The phrase “young group” raised some eyebrows, especially since Raven Johnson and Sakima Walker have yet to confirm their return, and next season’s roster could still feature a healthy mix of veterans and underclassmen. With only two freshmen incoming this summer, South Carolina is projected to have at least three scholarships available for portal additions—even more depending on final player decisions.

It’s clear that size and experience will be priorities this offseason. With a couple of perimeter starters moving on, adding guards is also on the table. At times this season, the Gamecocks struggled to generate offense against elite defenses, a problem that could be addressed by acquiring a dynamic scoring threat or two.

Staley kept things cryptic but intriguing when she hinted at the staff’s behind-the-scenes moves. “There’s some things in the works that will make our team better,” she told reporters.

One major name floating in connection with South Carolina is Florida State transfer Ta’Niya Latson, an explosive guard with proven scoring ability. While her name has generated buzz, other potential targets remain largely under wraps.

Last offseason, the Gamecocks brought in just one transfer—former Arkansas forward Maryam Dauda. This year, judging by Staley’s tone and available scholarships, that number could be significantly higher as the program looks to reload and return to championship form.
