Another Big Addition? Coach Dawn Staley Hints at New Arrival for Gamecocks
The South Carolina Gamecocks women’s basketball team may be welcoming a new face — at least that’s what Head Coach Dawn Staley is hinting at. In a cryptic post on X (formerly Twitter) on the afternoon of April 21, Staley stirred up buzz by posting:
“A birdie just flew in the nest!!!”
She followed it with three emojis, leaving fans guessing and excited.
The fan responses came pouring in quickly. One wrote, “I assume it’s Madina Okot, which is a player that would complete our team.” Another chimed in with, “Awesome 2025 /2026, let’s go!”
The speculation comes shortly after Talia Goodman of On3Sports reported that Okot, who currently plays for the Mississippi State Bulldogs, had been visiting South Carolina. However, some fans picked up on the possibility that Staley’s “birdie” tweet might actually be referencing a school with a devil mascot, like Duke or Arizona, adding more mystery to the announcement.
Madina Okot recently declared her intention to transfer, entering the portal earlier this month. She started all 34 games for the Bulldogs this past season, making her a valuable prospect.
This news follows a flurry of transfer activity in Columbia. Ta’Niya Latson, the nation’s leading scorer, has officially committed to South Carolina. Shortly after, MiLaysia Fulwiley shocked fans by announcing her departure.
In a heartfelt Instagram message, Fulwiley said:
“I want to begin by thanking my hometown of Columbia, SC. Without my village, I wouldn’t be where I am today, chasing my dreams. Thank you to Coach Staley, the entire South Carolina staff, and my teammates for the unforgettable memories we’ve created together. Most importantly. Thank you to the FAMS for embracing me and supporting me over the past two years. After thoughtful consideration, I’ve decided to enter the transfer portal. I’m excited for what’s next and grateful for all the continued love and support.”
As the offseason heats up, all eyes are on Dawn Staley and her next move. Could Okot be the missing piece for another championship run?
