Dawn Staley Statue Sparks Fan Frenzy—and Rekindles Feud with Geno Auriemma
March Madness came to a dramatic close as Geno Auriemma led his UConn Huskies to their 12th national championship, further solidifying his legendary status. In his 40th season, Auriemma became the oldest head coach to win a title, defeating Dawn Staley’s South Carolina Gamecocks in a commanding 82-59 victory. “Most other places, if you win one national championship, they build a statue to you outside the building. Here, they won’t even let you get to the front of the bus,” Auriemma quipped after the win.

According to Lulu Kesin of the Greenville News, the statue of Staley will be unveiled soon, adding another layer to her storied legacy. Since joining South Carolina in 2008, Staley, now 54, has completely transformed the program—leading the Gamecocks to three national titles and seven Final Four appearances. Her impact on and off the court has been undeniable.
