WELCOME HOME, DBU is Back: LSU’s Blockbuster Offseason Creates a Secondary Built to Dominate the SEC!”

LSU Rebuilds Secondary into Championship-Caliber Unit with Elite Talent and Key Additions

For years, LSU fans have endured the frustrating sight of opposing wide receivers roaming free through the Tigers’ secondary—hands raised, waiting for the inevitable big-play touchdown. Despite boasting one of the program’s most explosive offenses in 2023, LSU’s defense fell far below expectations, squandering golden opportunities due to a lackluster secondary.

In response, Brian Kelly made aggressive moves in the offseason. He brought back a familiar and respected name in Corey Raymond, the mastermind behind many of LSU’s legendary defensive back units, to coach cornerbacks. Alongside him, Jake Olsen was hired to guide the safeties. With their arrival, the rallying cry among the LSU faithful became: “Wait until Corey gets his guys in the room.”

Corey Raymond Finally Has His Guys—and the Results Are Showing

The secondary overhaul began with a monster recruiting class, headlined by DJ Pickett, the nation’s top cornerback prospect. Pickett made an immediate impression during spring practices and is already in contention to start in Week 1 against Clemson.

In the transfer portal, LSU targeted experience and production. They added:

  • Ja’Keem Jackson, a former Raymond recruit who started Week 1 for Florida before injury;
  • Mansoor Delane, a versatile and proven talent from the ACC;
  • Tamarcus Cooley, regarded as one of the best safeties in the country—immediately seen as a major upgrade.

Following the winter portal, the Tigers’ fanbase was buzzing. The cornerback room looked revitalized, but there were still lingering questions at safety.

AJ Haulcy Becomes the Crown Jewel of LSU’s Offseason

When Houston safety AJ Haulcy entered the spring transfer portal, it was clear LSU had to act. Haulcy, known for his hard-hitting, ball-hawking style, quickly became a top priority. Miami initially appeared to be the favorite after hosting Haulcy on a red-carpet visit. However, LSU emerged as the frontrunner, and by Sunday night, sealed the deal.

Haulcy, the No. 2-ranked safety and 13th overall transfer in this portal cycle, now joins a reloaded LSU defense ready to make noise in the SEC. His presence is expected to be a massive upgrade over recent years’ safety play.

Depth and Experience Fuel a New Era

Beyond the stars, LSU’s depth has improved dramatically. Players like Ashton Stamps, PJ Woodland, and DaShawn Spears—all of whom saw meaningful snaps in 2024—now serve as experienced and reliable backups.

Every area of the secondary, apart from perhaps Zy Alexander (now with the Seattle Seahawks), has been upgraded. With a complete talent revamp, the Tigers’ secondary now looks poised to compete for an SEC title and push for a College Football Playoff berth.

LSU’s defensive backfield is no longer a weakness—it’s a strength built for greatness.
