At Least 11 Hospitalized After Memorial Day Weekend Shooting in Little River, South Carolina
A shooting near a boat dock in Little River, South Carolina, disrupted Memorial Day weekend celebrations late Sunday, May 25, leaving at least 11 people hospitalized, according to the Horry County Police Department.
The gunfire reportedly stemmed from an argument aboard a docked charter boat during a private gathering, officials told USA TODAY. The Horry County Police confirmed the incident on Facebook around 9:30 p.m. local time, saying first responders transported 11 victims to nearby hospitals, while others arrived on their own. Authorities confirmed that 10 of the victims suffered gunshot wounds, with some in critical but stable condition.
Police have classified the shooting as an “isolated incident,” emphasizing there is “no risk to the community at this time.” However, they have not confirmed any arrests yet, and investigations are ongoing to identify those responsible.
In a separate but related incident the same evening, a North Myrtle Beach Police officer suffered a leg injury from an accidental weapon discharge while responding to a different call in the area. The officer was promptly transported to a hospital and is reported to be in stable condition, according to Public Information Officer Lauren Jessie.
“No other individuals were injured, and there is no ongoing threat to public safety,” Jessie stated, while commending the swift action of medical personnel and assisting agencies.
