Dawn Staley Reacts with Heartfelt Message to South Carolina Staffer’s Departure

South Carolina’s Dawn Staley Bids Emotional Farewell to Longtime Band Staffer Amid Program Changes

Dawn Staley, the legendary head coach of the South Carolina Gamecocks, continues to solidify her status as a powerhouse in women’s college basketball, leading the program to three national championships and a recent title game appearance. As the Gamecocks gear up for another high-stakes season, change is happening beyond the court.

Over the weekend, Quintus F. Wrighten Jr., who served as the Assistant Director of Bands and a key member of the University of South Carolina School of Music, officially announced his departure from the program. After four impactful years, Wrighten is heading to a new opportunity at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, joining their Band of Gold.

“We are excited to begin the next chapter of our lives in Mississippi!” Wrighten shared via social media. “Many thanks to my friends and students of the @UofSC School of Music! The last 4 years have been filled with collegiality, growth, and artistry. Thank you! FOREVER to thee! And now, let’s go Band of Gold!!!”

The announcement sparked a heartfelt response from Dawn Staley, who has been a staple of the South Carolina athletic community since taking over as head coach in 2008.

“Omgoodness! I’m super happy for you Quintus but sad to see you go!” Staley replied on social media. “We have some great times and we’ll miss you dearly! Best to you and you will always be a Gamecock!!”

Staley, who began her coaching career at Temple University in 2000 before taking the reins at South Carolina, has built a dynasty over her 15+ years in Columbia. Under her leadership, the Gamecocks have earned:

  • Seven Final Four appearances
  • Nine SEC regular-season championships
  • Nine SEC Tournament titles

Now heading into another promising season, Coach Staley and her program are not just looking to bounce back — they’re aiming to reclaim their dominance in women’s hoops.

While Wrighten’s departure marks the end of an era for the Gamecocks’ band community, his impact won’t be forgotten — and neither will the bond he formed with Staley and the university at large.
