“South Carolina Takes Over the WNBA: Two Former Gamecocks Dominate Player of the Week Honors!”

South Carolina Women’s Basketball Legends A’ja Wilson and Allisha Gray Shine with WNBA Weekly Honors

Former South Carolina Gamecocks standouts A’ja Wilson and Allisha Gray have wasted no time making an impact in the early stages of the 2025 WNBA season—and on Tuesday, their dominance was officially recognized. The league announced that Wilson and Gray were named Players of the Week for their respective conferences, representing the Western Conference (Las Vegas Aces) and Eastern Conference (Atlanta Dream).

This marks the first Player of the Week honor of the 2025 season for both women. For Wilson, the accolade is particularly significant—it is the 23rd time in her career she has earned the weekly recognition, moving her past Tamika Catchings for fourth-most in league history. Only Tina Charles (33), Candace Parker (27), and Elena Delle Donne (24) have received more.

Despite being a two-time WNBA All-Star, this is the first Player of the Week award for Allisha Gray, making the achievement a milestone in her career.

Wilson’s numbers were staggering over the past week. The Aces’ superstar forward averaged 27 points, 10 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 3.5 blocks, and 3 steals per game. She was efficient across the board—shooting over 50% from the field, 40% from three-point range, and hitting a perfect 10-for-10 from the free-throw line. Unsurprisingly, Las Vegas went 2-0 during the stretch.

Gray put on a similarly impressive display, leading the Dream to a 2-0 week by averaging 26.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 4 assists per game. She shot an exceptional 15-of-23 from the floor, 5-of-8 from beyond the arc, and 18-of-20 from the stripe. In an interesting coincidence, Atlanta’s wins came against the Los Angeles Sparks and Seattle Storm—the same two teams Las Vegas defeated that week.

Heading into the next stretch of the season, the Aces hold a 4-2 record and remain heavy favorites to contend for the title. Meanwhile, the Dream are off to a strong 5-2 start, emerging as one of the most improved teams in the WNBA.

With both Wilson and Gray turning heads, the South Carolina legacy continues to thrive at the professional level.
