At the midpoint of Manchester City’s US tour, manager Pep Guardiola spoke about the squad’s status and future plans.
Guardiola seems to have confirmed that no new players will join the squad for the final two matches of their American tour. According to the Manchester Evening News, any City player who advanced beyond the group stages at the European Championship will begin their pre-season in Manchester in August. Those who reached the final—Rodri, Kyle Walker, John Stones, and Phil Foden—have been granted additional time off if needed, preparing for a season extending into July due to the expanded Club World Cup next summer.
Despite reports from the official City website about potential new arrivals, including Josko Gvardiol and Mateo Kovacic joining the squad in New York, Guardiola downplayed these expectations. The team is currently in Orlando for a match against Barcelona on Tuesday before facing Chelsea in Ohio.
When asked if more players would be available for these friendlies, Guardiola responded, “I don’t think so, everyone who was joining us is back. I give extra days when we come back to Manchester.”
Guardiola also mentioned that he instructed the four European Championship finalists to delay their return to training until they genuinely feel ready, even if it means missing the Community Shield against United on August 10. City prefers to give their players a four-week summer break, recognizing the intense demands of the season.
In this context, the manager’s focus appears to be on ensuring players are well-rested and prepared for the upcoming challenges, rather than rushing them back into action prematurely. This approach underscores the club’s commitment to player welfare and long-term success, as they gear up for another grueling season.
