Man City’s Rodri Nightmare: Potential Replacement Already in Sight
Manchester City’s worst fears have been confirmed—star midfielder Rodri will miss the remainder of the season due to a serious knee injury. However, Pep Guardiola’s side might already have a replacement lined up in Torino’s Samuele Ricci.
Rodri’s injury occurred just 20 minutes into City’s recent clash with Arsenal, when he landed awkwardly after challenging Thomas Partey during a corner. Despite initial hopes that the damage wouldn’t be too severe, the club later confirmed that the Spaniard will be out for nine months following surgery to repair his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).
Guardiola addressed the news in a press conference, stating: “Next season he will be here. This season is over. It is what it is at that level. We are here to support him. Good recovery, step by step, and we move forward.”
With Rodri out, City are exploring their options for the January transfer window. According to reports from The Guardian, the reigning Premier League champions are seriously considering a move for 23-year-old Ricci, who has been instrumental in Torino’s impressive rise to the top of Serie A this season.
Ricci also made waves during Italy’s 3-1 Nations League victory over France, further boosting his stock. His price tag is estimated to be around £30 million, but he’s seen as a long-term addition rather than just a temporary solution. At 5’11”, Ricci offers both the physicality and technical skill needed to excel in the Premier League. Known for his passing range, composure under pressure, and ability to tackle and block effectively, the young midfielder could be a valuable asset for City’s title defense.
However, prying him away from Torino could prove challenging, especially if the Italian club continues their fine form. Torino would be reluctant to part with Ricci mid-season, though City’s financial muscle may turn the tide.
As City prepare to face Newcastle United at St. James’ Park, Guardiola admitted that replacing Rodri is no small task. “What he gives us, we don’t have a similar player, but the other players altogether can replace what Rodri has given since he arrived to us,” Guardiola said. “We have to do it as a team and find a way to play during a lot of months without an important player. Everybody knows it.”
While Rodri’s absence is a major blow, City’s pursuit of Ricci could help soften the impact and keep their ambitions on track for the remainder of the season.
