“Pep Guardiola’s 15-Word Praise for England’s Top Target Thomas Tuchel Reveals Everything”

Thomas Tuchel has reportedly become the leading contender for the vacant England manager role, and Pep Guardiola’s past praise of the German coach helps explain why. According to Sky Sports, the FA is in discussions with the former Chelsea boss, viewing him as their top candidate, despite previous speculation linking Guardiola to the position.

Tuchel, 51, who last managed Bayern Munich before parting ways at the end of last season, has made it clear he is eager to return to English football. Reports suggest he is open to taking charge at St George’s Park and leading the England national team. His time at Chelsea saw him achieve remarkable success, including a Champions League win in 2021, defeating Manchester City in the final.

That victory, along with Chelsea’s other wins over City that season, left a strong impression on Guardiola. Speaking in 2022, the City boss praised Tuchel’s creativity, admitting, “He’s so creative… one of the few managers I learn constantly from to become a better manager.” Guardiola added, “He’s excellent in all departments. I’ve enjoyed watching him since Mainz. He makes world football better.”

Before that 2021 Champions League final, Guardiola explained why Tuchel’s Chelsea was such a difficult team to face: “They play so well because they’re close in all parts of the field… the defenders, midfielders, strikers, and wingbacks all operate in a tight, well-coordinated system.”

As the FA explores its options, Tuchel isn’t the only candidate in demand. Manchester United has reportedly held talks with him as a potential replacement for Erik ten Hag if their form doesn’t improve. Should United act swiftly, the FA may shift its focus back to Guardiola, who was initially seen as the preferred option to succeed Gareth Southgate after Euro 2024.

Guardiola’s contract with City expires at the end of the season, and while extension talks have stalled, the club is eager for a decision. The FA had previously inquired about Guardiola’s availability after Southgate’s resignation but has not made further progress. Other managers like Eddie Howe and Graham Potter are also under consideration, with FA technical director John McDermott reportedly seeking a coach with a strong track record of winning, making Tuchel and Guardiola high on their list.
