With uncertainty surrounding Pep Guardiola’s future at Manchester City, speculation about his potential successor is heating up. Former City player Costel Pantilimon believes Xabi Alonso could be the man to step into Guardiola’s shoes.
Guardiola’s contract is set to expire next year, and with no signs of a renewal, many are wondering who might take over at the Etihad. Alonso, currently managing Bayer Leverkusen, has emerged as a strong candidate. Having previously worked under Guardiola at Bayern Munich, Alonso has impressed in his managerial career, notably leading Leverkusen to an ‘Invincibles’ season in the Bundesliga last year.
Pantilimon, speaking at the launch of Ladbrokes’ Gaffer of all Accas, shared his thoughts on the possible transition. “I would really like to see Xabi Alonso take over from [Guardiola]. I’ve heard so many good things about him. He’s done an amazing job at Bayer Leverkusen, managing in Spain and winning the title in Germany without a single loss,” Pantilimon said. He also noted the prior working relationship between Alonso and Guardiola as a factor that could play a role in the decision.
Alonso was reportedly Liverpool’s top target to replace Jurgen Klopp during the summer but chose to remain with Leverkusen. However, Pantilimon believes City could sway him if Guardiola decides to move on.
There are other names in the mix, including Sporting’s Ruben Amorim, former City captain Vincent Kompany, now managing Bayern Munich, and Girona’s Michel. But Alonso’s tactical acumen and his connection to Guardiola could give him the edge.
Though Guardiola may still extend his stay at City, the club is eager for clarity on his future to prepare for the 2025/26 season. Insiders remain confident that Guardiola might stay, particularly after England’s decision to appoint Thomas Tuchel as manager, a job Guardiola was linked to.
While Alonso’s Leverkusen have had a slight dip in form this season, they’re still performing well, just a few points behind Bayern Munich. Pantilimon, who spent three years at City, believes Alonso has what it takes to step up if needed. Pantilimon, known for his height and stint as Joe Hart’s backup at City, has retired from professional football but remains a keen observer of the game and his former club.
With Guardiola’s future still up in the air, all eyes are on who could lead City next, and Alonso appears to be a top contender.
