Gary Lineker to Step Down from Match of the Day – Who Will Replace Him?
Gary Lineker, the iconic face of BBC’s Match of the Day, will step down as the show’s presenter at the end of the 2024-25 Premier League season, concluding a remarkable tenure of over 25 years. While Lineker will no longer host the flagship football highlights program, he has agreed to stay with the BBC until after the 2026 World Cup to continue presenting live matches.
Reshmin Chowdhury Emerges as a Leading Candidate
Reports suggest that Reshmin Chowdhury, a prominent anchor for TNT Sports, is in contention to replace Lineker. The 46-year-old has a strong history with the BBC, having previously worked as a commentator, and is said to be highly regarded by peers. Speculation about her candidacy grew after it was revealed that Mark Chapman, the current host of Match of the Day 2, declined an offer to share hosting duties with Kelly Somers.
Alex Kay-Jelski, BBC Director of Sport, has reportedly expressed interest in Chowdhury in the past, attempting to recruit her during his time at The Athletic.
Lineker’s Legacy and Continued Role
Following the announcement of Lineker’s departure from Match of the Day, Kay-Jelski praised the veteran broadcaster:
“Gary is a world-class presenter, and we’re delighted that he’ll lead our coverage of the next World Cup and continue to lead our live coverage of the FA Cup. After 25 seasons, Gary is stepping down from MOTD. We want to thank him for everything he has done for the show, which continues to attract millions of viewers each week. Lineker also reflected on his extended partnership with the BBC:

Chapman and Murphy’s Take on the Vacancy
Chapman’s decision to turn down the role as Lineker’s successor surprised many, including Danny Murphy, a long-standing BBC football analyst. Speaking to talkSPORT, Murphy expressed his admiration for Chapman, stating:
“Mark Chapman, who I work with a lot on Sundays, is a brilliant presenter and very, very knowledgeable on sport and football. Somebody who is ready-made for it. Whether he wants it or not, I don’t know… But he would be the glaring, obvious choice for me.”
BBC Takes Its Time
With Lineker set to stay on for another season, the BBC is under no immediate pressure to announce his replacement, leaving room for speculation and careful deliberation.
