Pep Guardiola: ‘Call Me Delusional,’ But Man City Will Bounce Back
Pep Guardiola reflected on Manchester City’s 2-0 loss to Liverpool, acknowledging the challenges his team faces while maintaining belief in their ability to recover. Despite being overwhelmed by Liverpool’s intensity in the opening 20 minutes at Anfield, City kept the game close until a Mohamed Salah penalty sealed their fate.
Guardiola on City’s Current Form
City’s ongoing defensive and attacking struggles have put their hopes for a seventh Premier League title in eight years at serious risk. Guardiola admitted: “This team is so far off the ‘prime’ City sides that have come to Anfield in previous years, it’s not even necessary to illustrate the gulf.”
However, he emphasized the effort shown by his players: “I’m pleased with the commitment on the pitch. The team gave everything.”
Injuries and the Path to Recovery
City’s campaign has been heavily impacted by injuries, but Guardiola is optimistic about the road ahead as key players return. “I want the team back, and the players back. Now, training sessions are better, and four or five players are coming back.”
He expressed confidence in a turnaround, even if it might sound unrealistic. “Call me delusional, but I have the feeling that from here we will start to build back to winning games and confidence.”
On the Title Race
Guardiola was realistic about City’s position: “Our target cannot be talking about titles in November or December. We didn’t do it when we were top of the league, so we won’t do it now.”
He praised Liverpool’s form, saying, “Liverpool have won all their games in the Champions League and only lost once in the Premier League. That shows how good they are. All we can do is congratulate them and learn from them.”
The Bigger Picture
Despite the setback, Guardiola remains focused on the long-term. “It’s still December, not the end of the season. Many things can happen, and drastic decisions can still be made.”
He credited his players for their contributions over the years: “This group of players has given me the best years of my life as a manager. I owe it to them to find solutions to win games again.”
Looking Ahead
City will now turn their attention to Nottingham Forest at the Etihad on Wednesday. Guardiola acknowledged the challenge: “Forest are just one place below us in the table and in better form, but I believe improvement is coming.”
Guardiola’s determination remains steadfast: “I have to find a solution with the players to try to win games. We’ve been through tough moments before, and I’m confident we’ll bounce back.”
