“He didn’t hit the heights he expected,” Wolves scold departing Matheus Nunes in a scathing statement following his £52 million move to Manchester City.
Following Matheus Nunes’ £52 million transfer to Manchester City, Wolves have fired their final salvo at him.

- A midfielder had gone on strike.
- Club criticizes players’ performances at Molineux.
WHAT HAPPENED: The club criticized Nunes’ refusal to report to training after Pep Guardiola’s team expressed interest in signing him in a harsh statement they released as they confirmed his move to City.
Following his club-record acquisition from Sporting CP last year, Wolves also criticized the Portugal international’s performances for the West Midlands team.
WHAT THEY SAID: Wolves sporting director Matt Hobbs said, “I was disappointed with how it ended, it wasn’t necessary the stance Matheus took, but we ended with a good resolution for everyone.”.
“Matheus is a tremendously talented player, but he would admit that last season he didn’t reach the heights he expected.
However, it was a difficult season for the team, so perhaps he wasn’t allowed to do that.”.
THE BIGGER PICTURE: Nunes contributed to the same number of goals in just two games for Sporting CP, but only once for Wolves in the Premier League last season.
“Everyone knows Pep improves players — we have seen it so often — and we cannot wait to see how Matheus develops under his management,” City sporting director Txiki Begiristain said.”.
