“Is Kevin O’Connell on the Out? Florio Claims Major Tension with Vikings Ownership!”

In a new twist in the ongoing Minnesota Vikings’ offseason drama, Mike Florio of NBC Sports’ ProFootballTalk has once again stirred the pot, claiming there’s tension between Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell and ownership. This time, the issue centers around O’Connell’s lack of a contract extension prior to the 2024 season. According to Florio, the Vikings’ failure to secure an extension for O’Connell after his second season has caused friction within the organization. O’Connell is entering the final year of his current four-year deal, making an extension a top priority for the Vikings this offseason.

“There’s tension in the relationship, stemming largely from the fact that he didn’t get an extension after his second season,” Florio reported. “Now that he’s one year away from free agency, he could be willing to let it ride, if necessary, and hit the market… If O’Connell chooses to bet on himself for one more year, he might end up with a lot more from another team than whatever the Vikings will offer.”

The speculation gained traction after FOX’s Jay Glazer reported that multiple teams were eyeing O’Connell in a potential trade. Glazer doubled down on this report, despite skepticism, saying, “I don’t really get a lot wrong.”

Florio echoed Glazer’s sentiments, suggesting O’Connell might be seeking “better alignment with the GM” and “more say in roster construction.” However, this raises questions, as O’Connell and GM Kwesi Adofo-Mensah have been known for their collaboration, with the team boasting a strong roster and ample cap space moving forward.

Florio also hinted at the New York Jets interviewing O’Connell’s college roommate for their GM position, adding fuel to the fire of speculation. However, it seems a stretch to suggest O’Connell would leave the Vikings for such reasons, especially with the solid team infrastructure already in place.

The crux of the situation, as Florio suggests, is money. O’Connell’s regular-season success (34-17 record) contrasts with his 0-2 postseason record, which could affect his leverage in contract talks. Florio noted, “If Kevin O’Connell doesn’t get the kind of contract that he thinks he deserves, he’d be inclined to finish out his contract and take his chances.”

Despite the buzz, it’s important to note that the Vikings have shown no signs of lowballing O’Connell. Vikings owner Mark Wilf confirmed earlier this month that extension talks would take place with both O’Connell and Adofo-Mensah. When asked about the speculation surrounding his future, O’Connell himself stated, “I love this team, I love everything about this organization, and this is where I want to be.”

With O’Connell and Adofo-Mensah scheduled for end-of-season press conferences, this topic may come up again. Until a new contract is signed, though, the rumors will likely persist.
