Captain Munnerlyn Takes the Helm as Head Coach of Chambers High School Football
Charlotte, NC – Former Carolina Panthers standout Captain Munnerlyn is stepping into a new leadership role as the head coach of the football program at Chambers High School in northeast Charlotte. The 36-year-old, known for his remarkable career in the NFL, is now turning his focus to developing young talent at the high school level.
Munnerlyn, who spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach at Myers Park, brings a wealth of experience and deep ties to the Carolinas. A former star at the University of South Carolina, Munnerlyn earned All-SEC honors in 2007 before being drafted by the Carolina Panthers in 2009.
The former cornerback enjoyed an impressive NFL career, spending his first five seasons with the Panthers before playing three seasons with the Minnesota Vikings. Munnerlyn returned to the Panthers in 2017 for two more seasons before briefly signing with the Buffalo Bills in 2019. Over his professional career, he recorded 12 interceptions, returning five of them for touchdowns.
Now, Munnerlyn takes charge of a Chambers football program that finished 5-5 under former head coach Brandon Wiggins last season. Speaking about his new role, Munnerlyn is expected to bring the same energy and discipline that made him a standout player to the Chargers’ sidelines.
The announcement of his hiring comes as Chambers looks to rebuild and reclaim its position as one of the area’s top football programs. A press conference introducing Munnerlyn as the next head coach was scheduled for Friday afternoon.
