For tonight’s Premier League match at the Etihad Stadium against Newcastle United, Ruben Dias has been reinstated to Manchester City’s starting lineup.
Due to a concussion, the Portuguese center back has missed the last two matches, including Wednesday’s win over Sevilla in the UEFA Super Cup.
To make up for Cole Palmer and Nathan Ake, who both played key roles in City’s UEFA Super Cup victory, Dias and attacker Julian Alvarez have been recalled to Pep Guardiola’s starting lineup for tonight’s game against the Magpies.
The back four that will defend goalkeeper Ederson between the pipes will include Dias in addition to captain Kyle Walker, Manuel Akanji, and Josko Gvardiol, who is making his home debut.
Alvarez is slated to play in behind star striker Erling Haaland as Rodri and Mateo Kovacic link up in center midfield with Phil Foden and Jack Grealish manning the flanks.
Due to respective muscle and illness issues, John Stones and Bernardo Silva are both out, and Aymeric Laporte is not present in Man City’s matchday squad despite rumors of a potential summer departure.
A week after their resounding 5-1 home win over Aston Villa, Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has chosen to keep the same starting lineup.
Back four of Kieran Trippier, Fabian Schar, Sven Botman, and Dan Burn will line up behind midfielders Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes, and Joelinton. Miguel Almiron, who scored in the 3-3 draw with Man City at St. James’ Park last season, keeps his spot in the front three with Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak, who scored twice against Aston Villa last weekend.
On the substitutes’ bench are players like Callum Wilson, Sean Longstaff, and Elliot Anderson, as well as recent additions Harvey Barnes and Valentino Livramento.
Manchester City’s starting lineup is as follows: Ederson; Walker; Akanji; Dias; Gvardiol; Rodri; Kovacic; Foden; Alvarez; Grealish; and Haaland.
Alternates: Ortega, Phillips, Ake, Gomez, Perrone, Bobb, Palmer, Lewis, and McAtee.
Newcastle United’s starting eleven are as follows: Pope; Trippier; Schar; Botman; Burn; Tonali; Guimaraes; Joelinton; Almiron; Isak; and Gordon.
Dubravka, Lascelles, Wilson, Ritchie, Targett, Livramento, Barnes, Anderson, and Longstaff are the substitutes.
