Alvarez hit the post as the visitors kept trying to score, and Erling Haaland’s acrobatic volley forced goalkeeper Alphonse Areola into an outstanding save.
After 76 minutes, West Ham’s defense was finally broken when Bernardo Silva pounced on waves of City pressure to grab Alvarez’s lofted pass and savagely snipe above Areola.
With the third goal, Haaland then added polish.
