The confusion between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid has never stopped, but recent events have sparked anger in Barcelona and increased support for Real Madrid from Spanish sporting and regulatory authorities.
In his pre-match press conference against Athletic Club, Xavi addressed some of these issues.
Xavi on Laporta accusation of social Madridism
Barcelona president Joan Laporta was recently accused of bribery, and in response Laporta pointed to the “sociological Madridism” of Spanish institutions, which has spawned similar allegations against the Catalan club.
As reported by SPORT, Xavi has unconditionally backed Laporta, citing several historical examples in the media and believes that Madrid have the advantage.
“Of course (it exists), you just look at the records. Villarato, doping…
The president (Joan Laporta), as usual, I completely agree with what he says. He is a very positive and courageous person.
He is the leader of the whole project.”
In his next comment on social Madridism, Xavi said:
“As I said earlier, these are conditions that lead to some instability.
(These days) there is a lot of talk about issues other than soccer. I love hearing people talk about soccer.
When I was a footballer, in my best years at the club, we were doing very well, but there was talk of doping. And “Villarato” was invented by the Real Madrid club in Madrid.
The ban on nachos is reduced
Another development that caused concern at Barcelona and was discussed by Xavi was that of Nacho Fernandez.
The Real Madrid player was shown a red card against Osasuna, which earned him a three-match ban and meant he will miss the match against Barcelona.
However, the RFEF reduced Nacho’s ban to two matches, allowing him to play against Barcelona.
On this subject, Xavi said:
“Is this ‘sociological madridism’ (the solution)?” This is a question for the committee, but I’m curious.
I sent Robert (Lewandowski).
They didn’t send him for that gesture.
As an athlete, I was surprised by the severity of the fight.
With such media coverage, the upcoming El Clásico is sure to be a tough one. Real Madrid have the advantage over Barcelona as Barcelona do not currently have many key players injured, but anything can happen on the pitch.
