Cole Palmer of Chelsea is “confused” by Pep Guardiola’s transfer decision.

Cole Palmer, a star for Chelsea, said he was “confused” when Pep Guardiola denied his request to go on loan from Manchester City during the summer.

The talented midfield player appeared destined to contribute more to the treble-winning team this year after netting goals in the Community Shield and European Super Cup finals.

But after Jeremy Doku was signed, Palmer—who was desperate for a more firm assurance of playing football with the first team on a regular basis—asked his now-formal manager for an explanation.

Guardiola gave the 21-year-old a startling ultimatum, telling him he had to either stay and fight for his position or leave permanently.

“At first, I didn’t want to go,” Palmer stated to MailSport. Since I didn’t play many minutes [last season], I said I would go on loan and play for a year to get ready for first team football. I was sold, though, when Pep said, “You’re either staying or you’re getting sold.”

“When I said I wanted to go to Chelsea, they wouldn’t let me go on loan, so I was a little confused, but I’m glad it worked out the way it did.”

Chelsea has clearly gained from City’s loss, as Palmer has put on a number of incredible performances that imply Guardiola made an unusual mistake in judgment.

Palmer, who has already scored eight goals, appears certain to make an impression on Gareth Southgate’s team for the European Championships this summer.

Although many high-priced signings at Stamford Bridge have fallen short of expectations, Palmer already looks like a steal at just £42 million and is playing with a confidence that belies his lack of first team experience.

“I simply enjoy being in control and trying to make things happen,” he continued. “I would prefer that when the team is having trouble, they come to me to try and find a solution.”

‘That pushes me and the manager says “be free, express your abilities. Follow your instincts. I feel like I’ve accomplished significant things since I was young, even in the academies. That has always pleased me.

“It has surprised me, even though I know my abilities and stuff,” he says.

Though obviously things can change quickly, let’s hope this trend continues.
