Wayne Rooney Slams England as Pale Imitation of Pep Guardiola’s Man City
In a stinging critique, former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has drawn unflattering parallels between the current England squad and Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, suggesting England lacks the qualities that make City successful.
During the UEFA EURO 2024, England’s performances have been underwhelming. Despite a 1-0 win over Serbia in their opening match, a subsequent 1-1 draw with Denmark has intensified criticism. Key questions remain about Gareth Southgate’s deployment of players like Phil Foden, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Jude Bellingham, with critics pointing to a disjointed midfield and ineffective left flank.
Rooney, writing in the Sunday Times, expressed his view that Foden should play in midfield rather than out on the left, a sentiment he maintained after England’s first two games. He noted that while the England squad shows traces of Guardiola’s City, it lacks the precise coaching and strategies that define the Premier League champions.
“Watching England play at this tournament I see Manchester City,” Rooney observed. “But not the City who have just reeled off four consecutive Premier League titles with their brilliant football. They’re like City, except without the timing. And without the pressing strategy. And the width.”
Manchester City stars Phil Foden and Kyle Walker are integral to Southgate’s team, yet their impact has been questioned. Walker, the City captain, acknowledged the team’s shortcomings but pointed out that England remains at the top of their group with one match remaining. A draw against Slovenia will secure their qualification for the knockout rounds, while a win will guarantee first place.
In this expanded tournament format, topping the group means England will face a third-placed team in the last-16, offering a potentially easier path forward. However, for England to progress deep into the tournament, they will need to address the criticisms and find a way to harness the talents of their star players effectively.
