Manchester City Not Swayed by Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite Despite Defensive Prowess
Manchester City has shown little interest in pursuing Everton’s promising defender Jarrad Branthwaite this summer, despite the player’s impressive performances last season.
At 22, Branthwaite stood out for Everton as they managed to stay in the Premier League under Sean Dyche, even amid points deductions for financial rule breaches. His efforts earned him a call-up to the England squad in March, although he didn’t make the final cut for the Euros.
Earlier this summer, Everton was open to selling Branthwaite to avoid further sanctions but remained firm on their valuation. They rejected a £43 million offer from Manchester United, which they deemed insufficient. With the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules deadline now passed, Everton’s urgency to sell has lessened, and United has yet to return with an improved offer.
Despite speculation linking Branthwaite to Manchester City, the club has no plans to challenge Everton’s resolve. City’s priorities lie elsewhere, focusing on bolstering their midfield and attack. They are seeking cover for Rodri and have added Brazilian winger Savio to their offensive lineup. Although Branthwaite has demonstrated qualities that would fit City’s style, Pep Guardiola already has a robust roster of five world-class centre-backs.
Josko Gvardiol, acquired for £77.5 million last summer, was brought in to enhance a squad that achieved a historic Treble. His arrival increased competition among defenders, ultimately leading to Aymeric Laporte’s departure to Al Nassr. With Gvardiol, John Stones, Ruben Dias, Manu Akanji, and Nathan Ake firmly in place, there is simply no room for Branthwaite in Guardiola’s plans.
