Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson, who missed the conclusion of the domestic season and the Copa America due to an injury, is set to return to training soon, as the club aims to retain their top shot-stopper.
Ederson’s season came to an abrupt end in May when he sustained a fractured eye socket during the penultimate Premier League game against Tottenham. Despite his reluctance, this injury sidelined him for the final matches of the season and excluded him from Brazil’s Copa America squad once the severity of his injury became clear.
In his absence, Stefan Ortega stepped up impressively, earning praise for his performance off the bench against Spurs. Nonetheless, both manager Pep Guardiola and director of football Txiki Begiristain have reassured that Ederson remains the club’s No.1 goalkeeper. Although the Saudi Pro League has shown interest in the Brazilian keeper, City is confident in their ability to keep him.
Ederson’s recovery, which precluded his participation in the Copa America, does have a silver lining as it allows him to join City’s pre-season activities from the start. Having enjoyed a seven-week break, the 30-year-old is ready to reintegrate with the team and reclaim his position.
Despite the absence of several first-team stars, Guardiola will have both Ederson and Stefan Ortega available when the squad heads to the United States for four friendlies. This early involvement in pre-season will give Ederson a prime opportunity to secure his spot for the start of the season, with an opening weekend match against Chelsea on the horizon.
