Manchester City midfielder Rodri was taken off at half-time by Spain during the Euro 2024 final against England, raising concerns for his club with a potential injury.
Rodri’s reaction as he left the field at half-time was telling. The City midfielder, crucial for both Spain and his club, was the only City player in Spain’s starting lineup, while many of his teammates were representing England. After a lackluster first half, the 28-year-old did not return to the pitch.
Spain’s manager, Luis de la Fuente, replaced Rodri with Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi, surprising many given Rodri’s significance as a defensive midfielder.
In the opening 45 minutes, Rodri appeared to be struggling with his left hamstring. He was seen pulling up in pain and hunching over, prompting England’s Jude Bellingham to check on him. As he walked towards the tunnel for halftime, Rodri was met by Spain’s team doctor and seemed visibly upset, aware that he would not be able to continue. England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford watched on as Rodri left the field.
Despite Rodri’s departure, Spain quickly took the lead just two minutes into the second half with a goal from Nico Williams. Spain had won 14 of their last 15 matches with Rodri in the starting lineup, including victories in regulation time, extra time, and a penalty shootout.
In search of a spark, England’s manager Gareth Southgate brought on former City youth player Cole Palmer. Just two minutes and 33 seconds after his introduction, the 22-year-old scored a composed, low strike from distance to equalize.
With the match tied at 1-1 and only 10 minutes left, the game was poised for a tense extra-time showdown.
