Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson has had a turbulent summer amid swirling rumors about his future with the club.
The Brazilian shot-stopper recently addressed ‘false’ reports suggesting he was unhappy with the praise that backup keeper Stefan Ortega received last season. The controversy started during a crucial match against Tottenham Hotspur when Ederson had to leave the pitch due to a head injury, prematurely ending his season. Ortega stepped in and made a spectacular save against Son Heung-min, earning widespread acclaim.
A report by The Athletic claimed that Ederson was irked by the accolades Ortega received, with some even suggesting Ederson wouldn’t have made the same save. This rumor further fueled speculation that Ederson might be considering a move to Saudi Arabia, with Al Ittihad reportedly interested in signing him.
Taking to social media, Ederson refuted these claims, stating: “Clarifying that the note published by The Athletic yesterday, referring to the alleged dissatisfaction on my part with a co-worker. It is totally false. The alleged day reported was undoubtedly one of the most difficult days of my career when I suffered a fracture that prevented me from disputing the final stretch of the season and consequently, also in representing my country in the Copa America. At the time of the injury, my thought was only to continue in the match, defending City in the dispute of the title, but the emotion of the match would be greater than the reality and fatally, I would not be able to proceed as I would like due to the damage it caused, completely preventing my field of view.”
Ederson emphasized his commitment to Manchester City, adding, “I’m still focused on the preparation for the season. EM31.”
Meanwhile, Stefan Ortega has signed a new contract with City earlier this summer, solidifying his place at the Etihad Stadium. Ederson, who has two years remaining on his deal, seems determined to continue contributing to the team’s success despite the summer’s disruptions.
