Pep Guardiola will head back to Manchester with two new additions to his first team, having assessed the club’s promising young talents during their tour in the USA. Despite taking a youthful squad due to most senior players being on holiday post-international tournaments, Guardiola saw a silver lining in closely evaluating the academy’s best prospects within a first-team environment.
Initially stating he wanted five or six young players to bolster his squad, Guardiola has now narrowed it down to just two: Nico O’Reilly and James McAtee.
O’Reilly impressed once more with his performance against Chelsea, following up on his goal against Barcelona. Meanwhile, McAtee notched two assists in the second half, adding to his earlier goal against AC Milan.
“Every game was much better than the previous one,” Guardiola remarked. “Kalvin [Phillips] grew up, Erling [Haaland] grew up. Jack [Grealish] makes an incredible few games. Rico [Lewis] has been unbelievable with Oscar [Bobb]. Today McAtee showed his potential as a football player. Nico as well, played at a high level.
“All the young players got some minutes. Today I gave a debut to Stephen [Mfuni] at 16 years old. Everyone played. Some players will now be with the first team, some with the second, and some will go out on loan. Hopefully, next season they’ll come back.”
Guardiola confirmed, “Both [McAtee and O’Reilly] will be first-team options. The others are not ready yet to play with us. They will either go on loan or continue with the second team. Their development depends on them.”
With these new additions and the fresh evaluation of talent, Guardiola’s squad is shaping up for another intense season, ready to defend their Premier League title with renewed vigor.
