Get Ready For McAtee Magic: Pep’s Big Announcement

Pep Guardiola has made his stance clear on James McAtee’s future with Manchester City, emphasizing his desire to keep the young talent within the squad.

After a successful loan stint at Sheffield United, McAtee returned to the Etihad this summer with hopes of securing a spot under Guardiola, even if it meant less playing time. The 21-year-old has been actively involved in pre-season preparations and had a notable performance against Manchester United in the Community Shield, including a near goal when he hit the post.

While Guardiola initially expressed disappointment with McAtee’s performances in early friendlies against Celtic and AC Milan, he has since praised the midfielder’s improvements. Guardiola conveyed his intentions clearly to sporting director Txiki Begiristain: he wants to retain McAtee due to his unique abilities.

“It’s rare to find players who excel in tight spaces and can attack the final third as McAtee does,” Guardiola remarked. “That’s why I insisted to Txiki at the start of the season that I want him to stay and not be loaned out or sold. His specific skill set in confined areas is crucial for us.”

Guardiola continued, “In the first games, I wasn’t impressed and told him, ‘Your impact needs to be greater.’ But he responded well, and his contributions have been significant.”

The City boss also noted that McAtee’s time at Sheffield United has been invaluable. “His experience there has given him physicality, the ability to win duels, and an appreciation for the tougher aspects of the game—things not typically emphasized in the academy. This has added considerable value to his play,” Guardiola added.
