Julian Alvarez has officially completed his high-profile transfer to Atletico Madrid from Manchester City, marking the end of an era for the Argentine striker.
Atletico Madrid has secured Alvarez for an initial £64m, with the deal potentially reaching up to £81.5m (€95m) based on performance-related add-ons. This transfer represents the largest fee Manchester City has ever received for a player. The 24-year-old will now enjoy more regular first-team action, having won six trophies with City in just two years.
Pep Guardiola has expressed deep gratitude for Alvarez’s contributions, particularly his pivotal role in covering for Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne last season. As Alvarez embarks on this new chapter, he has taken the opportunity to express his appreciation for everyone at the Etihad who helped shape his career.
“I bid farewell to this incredible club with a heavy heart and immense emotion,” Alvarez said. “These past two years have been truly special. I’ve grown significantly, both as a player and as a person.”
He continued, “To the directors and coaching staff, your faith and support have been invaluable. Your guidance and vision have played a crucial role in my development.”
Alvarez also extended his thanks to his teammates, noting, “I am grateful for every shared moment, the hard work in training, and the dedication in matches. I have learned so much from all of you, and I leave with lasting memories and friendships.”
He concluded with a heartfelt message to the fans, “Thank you for the incredible support and for making me feel at home from day one. I will always be proud to have been part of this family. Manchester City will always hold a special place in my heart. I wish the club every success in the future and will continue to support from afar.”
