Manchester City are bracing themselves as their hearing date for the 115 charges against them approaches, with the potential for severe consequences looming large.
The English champions are facing the possibility of an enormous fine or even expulsion from the Premier League if found guilty. The charges, which have been hanging over City for a significant period, include allegations that their success is compromised by these unresolved accusations. Fans and critics alike have been eagerly awaiting a resolution, and now a date has finally been set.
The hearing is scheduled to commence next month, with a potential verdict expected as early as the new year. According to a report from The Times, while an independent commission was initially anticipated to review the case in November, it is now expected to start in mid-September, barring any further legal delays.
The process is expected to unfold over a 10-week period, with the outcome of a separate legal dispute regarding associated party transactions expected within the next two weeks. Manchester City have staunchly denied any wrongdoing, with senior figures firmly rejecting the accusations.
The charges span nine seasons and include claims that City failed to provide accurate financial information regarding payments to former manager Roberto Mancini and his players, as well as accusations of non-cooperation with the investigation.
What punishments could they face?
The potential penalties, according to the Premier League’s rulebook, are significant. Section W.51.4 of the regulations indicates that the club could be subject to a fine of “unlimited quantity,” although City’s substantial wealth makes the exact amount uncertain.
The most severe threat, however, is relegation from the Premier League. Such a punishment would be unprecedented, as the league has never had to deal with breaches of this magnitude before.
Points deductions are also a possible outcome, similar to what happened last season with Everton and Nottingham Forest. If imposed on City, this could disrupt their title ambitions or jeopardize their place in the top four.
It’s important to note that if City are penalized, they are likely to appeal. They previously had a two-year Champions League ban overturned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport after UEFA imposed the sanction.
