Former Manchester City captain Ilkay Gundogan is reportedly exploring his options as his future at Barcelona becomes uncertain.
According to recent reports, Gundogan, who now plays for Barcelona, has reached out to his former club, Manchester City, about a potential return. Gundogan had left City last summer after leading them to a historic Treble, choosing to join Barcelona for a new challenge at a club he holds dear. However, just a year later, things have drastically changed in Catalonia.
Under the new management of Hansi Flick, Barcelona is facing Financial Fair Play (FFP) challenges, and there are reports that the German coach is considering offloading Gundogan to ease the club’s financial strain. In light of this, Gundogan is said to have contacted Manchester City to discuss the possibility of rejoining the Premier League champions.
With Kalvin Phillips recently leaving City on loan to Ipswich Town, the club might see Gundogan’s return as a valuable addition to their central midfield options. Although Pep Guardiola shares a close relationship with Gundogan, it remains uncertain if the City manager will be at the helm beyond the 2025/26 season. Reports from Sky Sports suggest that City’s leadership may set a deadline for Guardiola to decide on his future, with the club hoping for clarity by Christmas so they can plan accordingly if he opts not to renew his contract.
