Brentford is reportedly preparing for the inevitable sale of Ivan Toney this summer, but a transfer to Manchester United seems increasingly unlikely.
Since returning from his betting ban in January, Toney has been vocal about his desire to join a “big club” competing for Premier League titles, recognizing that at 28 years old, his chances for a major move are limited.
On Sunday, Toney was noticeably absent from Brentford’s squad in their 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace. Manager Thomas Frank addressed his absence, stating, “A lot is happening with Ivan, especially with transfers, and there’s significant interest.” He added, “Because of all that, we decided not to include him in the squad. I can’t reveal too much the day before. Of course, Ivan is a top player, and he has been fantastic for us for four years, but we showed last season that we can cope without him.”
While Toney has been linked with Manchester United due to their limited striker options—Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee being the only recognized forwards—his future now appears to be heading towards Saudi Arabia.
According to The Times, Al Ahli, a Saudi Pro League club, is the frontrunner to secure Toney’s signature, with Brentford expected to demand a £50 million fee. Meanwhile, Manchester United is unlikely to pursue another forward this summer, as they focus on bringing in a central midfielder, with a move for PSG’s Manuel Ugarte on hold until the sale of an existing player, likely Scott McTominay.
