Ilkay Gundogan has made a surprising return to Manchester City after spending just one season with Barcelona. The German midfielder, who was instrumental in City’s treble-winning 2022/23 campaign, has rejoined the club to strengthen their midfield options and bring valuable leadership and experience back to the squad.
Gundogan’s departure to Barcelona came after he played a crucial part in helping City achieve the rare treble, a feat previously accomplished by Manchester United in 1999. During his time at Barcelona, Gundogan made 51 appearances, but City acted quickly to bring him back when they learned he had other offers on the table.
Now back at the Etihad, the 33-year-old has signed a one-year contract with an option for an additional 12 months. His return gives Pep Guardiola an abundance of choices in central midfield, where Rodri is a fixture in the deeper role, often flanked by Kevin De Bruyne and Mateo Kovacic.
Kovacic, who joined City following Gundogan’s initial departure, has yet to replicate the game-changing moments that Gundogan consistently delivered. One of Gundogan’s most memorable contributions was his decisive goal against Aston Villa on the final day of the 2021/22 season, a strike that secured the Premier League title for City by a narrow margin over Liverpool. He also shone in the FA Cup final, scoring twice against Manchester United to help City clinch the second leg of their treble.
Despite his age, Guardiola will be mindful of managing Gundogan’s playing time, much like he does with De Bruyne. However, having Gundogan back in the squad means that when City need a spark of brilliance, they have another proven matchwinner at their disposal.
The strongest potential City lineup could now feature: Ederson, Walker, Dias, Ake, Gvardiol, Rodri, Gundogan, De Bruyne, Foden, Doku, and Haaland.
