In a recent friendly match, Republic of Ireland fans showed their displeasure by booing Jack Grealish and Declan Rice, but both players ultimately silenced the critics with crucial goals in England’s 2-0 victory.
Jack Grealish, who has made a name for himself at Manchester City, faced a barrage of boos from the Irish supporters who were still aggrieved by his switch from representing Ireland to England. Undeterred, Grealish struck a decisive shot into the bottom left corner and celebrated by enthusiastically embracing the England fans, spreading his arms wide in jubilation.
Declan Rice, also a former Republic of Ireland player, chose a more subdued response. After scoring the opener for England, he raised his hands in a gesture of apology towards the crowd, acknowledging the tense atmosphere.
Reflecting on the reception post-match, Grealish commented, “Yeah, I think it was what me and Dec expected,” his grin betraying no ill feelings. “Me and Dec both enjoyed our time playing here. I certainly did. I have a lot of Irish in my family, so there’s no bad blood whatsoever from my side.”
Following the game, Grealish took to Instagram to share his excitement, writing, “Felt so good to be back playing in an England shirt. Perfect start in the Nations League.”
Rice joined in the celebration on social media, leaving a supportive comment for Grealish: “My boy man,” he simply wrote.
Before the match, Republic of Ireland forward Callum Robinson, who previously played alongside Grealish at Aston Villa, had predicted the situation. He noted, “I think he’ll be getting ready for a bit of abuse but that’s part of it, it’s part of the game. He’s old enough and with being a senior player now, that stuff’s going to come. I’d be surprised if he doesn’t because I think he gets booed anywhere he goes anyway, even in England.”
