Manchester City boasts a roster packed with players who have shined on the international stage.
During the 2024 European Championship, City led all Premier League teams with 14 players selected for the tournament. Four of them made it to the final, where Rodri’s Spain triumphed over England, which featured Kyle Walker, John Stones, and Phil Foden, in a narrow 1-0 victory.
Fast forward to the latest Nations League fixtures, several City stars were involved once again. But one of City’s most seasoned players received special recognition from his country’s fans.
German Fans Honor Ilkay Gundogan
In August, Ilkay Gundogan announced his retirement from international football after captaining Germany in the Euros. Before Germany’s recent 1-0 win over the Netherlands in the Nations League, fans at the Allianz Arena displayed a massive banner to honor Gundogan, alongside tributes for Manuel Neuer, Thomas Muller, and Toni Kroos, thanking them for their service to the national team.
Gundogan’s Legacy for Germany
Since returning to Manchester City from Barcelona this summer, pundit Darren Bent has hailed Gundogan’s signing as one of the best deals of the transfer window.
Gundogan made his debut for Germany in 2011 and accumulated 82 caps, scoring 19 goals and providing nine assists. He represented his country in numerous tournaments over the years.
During the October international break, Gundogan stayed fit by training with City’s U21 squad, reportedly impressing coaches and players alike.
The touching tribute from German fans highlights just how much Gundogan’s contributions to the national team have been valued throughout his international career.
