Ruben Amorim remains non-committal about his long-term future at Sporting Clube de Portugal despite having a contract extension on the table and ongoing links to top Premier League clubs.
Amorim, who has drawn interest from both Manchester United and Manchester City, recently addressed speculation about his next move. The 39-year-old, who has been under contract with Sporting until 2026, hasn’t yet signed a new deal despite Sporting’s offer. Previously linked to Liverpool, Amorim is now rumored to be a target for United and City, two clubs that may soon be in the market for a new manager under different circumstances.
Amorim’s tenure at Sporting has been highly successful, leading the team to two Liga Portugal titles and three domestic cups. Meanwhile, Erik ten Hag’s position at Manchester United appears increasingly precarious following a rough start to the season, making Amorim a potential candidate for the job. Over at Manchester City, Pep Guardiola’s future remains uncertain, as his contract is set to expire next summer. With City recently appointing Hugo Viana as their director of football, Amorim has been speculated as a possible replacement for Guardiola.
During a press conference ahead of Sporting’s Champions League clash with Strum Graz, Amorim was once again asked about his future. He responded: “The president [Frederico Varandas] is here watching the press conference, as well as sporting director Hugo Viana, and I’ve always said that I have the renewal [option] on the table.
“We have been talking about this for a long time. Regarding my future, I will not comment. If we look at today and how Sporting was a few years ago, it would be unlikely for someone to say that I would be here for five years.”
Amorim continued, reflecting on his unexpected longevity at the club: “The truth is that I feel very good here, and we don’t know what tomorrow will bring. But even I didn’t expect to stay at Sporting for so long. It’s a sign that we get along well and that it is difficult to part ways. However, there are many better coaches than me.”
Despite his uncertainty, Amorim’s impressive achievements and rising reputation make him one of the hottest managerial prospects in European football, with both United and City keeping a close eye on his next move.
